Getting Rid of Burnt Taste When Vaping – and Avoiding It

Especially if you recently gave up smoking and moved to vape, you may be feeling overwhelmed by all you still need to learn about your new hobby. The more advanced vape mods do require a little understanding, but once you get the hang of them, they’re a lot of fun. As a new vaper, you might experience the unpleasant sensation of breathing in burnt-tasting vapour after taking a puff. You shouldn’t worry about this burnt taste since it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your vape – or with vaping in general.

Where does the burnt taste come from?

When experienced vapers are asked this question, most will respond, “You’ve burned your coils.” However, it is more accurate to say that you’ve actually burned your wick (the cotton/wick that surrounds your coils). This could happen for several reasons, including:

– You did not prime your coils. You should prime your new coil by letting the wick become saturated for several minutes before using it. The cotton wick needs to be completely moistened with e-liquid before vaping since dry cotton, of course, burns. If your coil is new or has not been used for a long time, ensure the wick is completely soaked through.

– There wasn’t enough time. The failure to prime your coil is not the only reason that your first hit tastes burned. You may also not wait long enough after priming your coil. It is crucial that you allow your wick a sufficient amount of time to become fully saturated with e-liquid before starting to vape. In such a scenario, air pockets within the wick will remain, allowing them to burn, as well as causing the vapour you inhale to taste burned.

– You’re using too much wattage when you vape. You can lose your coils by making this mistake, or at a minimum, cause them to become temporarily burnt and need cleaning. (Screens with touch controls can be particularly problematic since it is easy to accidentally touch them and change the settings.) Ensure that you aren’t accidentally turning up the wattage on your vape before using it by checking it regularly.

– You don’t keep your tank filled. It is important not to expose any of the wicking holes or ports on the sides of your coil head if you want to prevent that burnt taste. You will reduce the lifespan of your coil and its wick if you expose your ports repeatedly. To prevent the tank from falling too low on e-liquid and coils, fill the tank up with e-liquid if it’s been empty. Then refill and keep the tank topped up in the future.

Some of these factors can cause the dreaded burnt taste or dry hit. Fortunately, you won’t have a serious problem if you keep a supply of new coils handy. Eventually, you will learn to recognize the signs of a burnt coil, and you will be able to take the necessary actions, whether that means cleaning the coil or replacing it.
