Ask a retreat leader why they chose Mexico and the answer is rarely the beaches. It is usually the flights.
A retreat only fills if people can actually get there. Cancun is one of the best connected airports in the Americas, with direct routes from most of North America and much of Europe. A leader in Toronto or Chicago can tell participants it is a four hour flight and a short transfer, and that sentence closes bookings. Compare it to a destination that costs two connections and a lost day at each end, and the difference is not comfort. It is whether the retreat sells out.
Season is the second reason. The Yucatan is at its best from November through April, which is precisely when people in the northern hemisphere start looking for a way out of winter. Leaders who run one retreat a year tend to run it then, and the region is built to absorb that demand.
The third reason is quieter. Once you leave the hotel strip and move inland, the coast changes completely. Twenty minutes from the sea there is jungle, and the difference in atmosphere is larger than the distance suggests. Groups that would have spent the week negotiating a resort lobby instead spend it somewhere with no competing noise. For most retreat formats that matters more than a sea view.
What leaders underestimate is how much the venue itself shapes the week. A property built for retreats runs on different assumptions than a hotel does. Meals arrive when the schedule needs them rather than when the restaurant opens. Nobody schedules a wedding next door.
